    Retired Armed Forces personnel till 2002 could avail medical facilities only for specific high cost surgery/treatment for a limited number of diseases covered under the Army Group Insurance(Medical Branch Scheme) (AGI(MBS)) and Armed Forces Group Insurance Scheme (Management Information System) (AFGIS (MIS)) schemes. These medicare schemes could provide some relief to the ESM, but it was not a comprehensive scheme as compared to and available for other Central Government Employees. Therefore, the requirement was felt of establishing a medicare system which could provide quality medicare to the retirees of the Armed Forces.

    The “Central Government Health Scheme” (CGHS) for the Central Govt. employees and their dependents was started in New Delhi in 1954. Subsequently, the scheme was extended to pensioners, freedom fighters and other specific groups of people. The scheme was introduced in Chennai in the year 1975, with 4 dispensaries to begin with.
    CGHS Chennai-Administrative office is located at Rajaji bhavan, Besant nagar, Chennai. With the Additional Director as head of the Institution.

Subsequently, the scheme was extended to pensioners, freedom fighters and other specific groups of people. The scheme was introduced in Kolkata during 1972. Apart from Delhi and Kolkata, the scheme now covers the cities of Mumbai, Allahabad, Meerut, Kanpur, Patna, Nagpur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Jaipur, Pune, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Thiruvananthapuram, Shillong, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Bhubaneswar and Ranchi.

    Applications are invited from the candidates throug ONLINE mode. Photograph and signature of the applicant are to be affixed in the duly filled in downloaded application form.

    Siddha system of Medicine, Govt. of India, by  bifurcating the erstwhile CCRAS, formed CCRS (Central Council for Research in Siddha) with its headquarters in Chennai and six Research Institutes/Units in four states namely, Tamil Nadu (Chennai, Mettur & Palayamkottai), Puducherry (Puducherry), New Delhi and Kerala (Thiruvananthapuram). Siddha is a science of holistic health emphasising both drug and diet for human health care.
