  • Novartis, the world's second largest pharmaceutical company, has announced that its antimalarial medicine Coartem 80/480mg received World Health Organisation (WHO) prequalification, making it the first and only high strength (80/480mg) artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) antimalarial treatment available for public sector procurement. This new dosage strength has the potential to improve malaria management.

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has revealed that lindane, an insecticide, widely used in agriculture and to treat human lice and scabies, can cause cancer and associated to occurrence of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a rare kind of cancer. International Agency for Research in Cancer (IARC's)  specialist panel classified lindane as "carcinogenic to humans" in its Group 1 category, DDT as "probably carcinogenic to humans" in its Group 2A class, and the herbicide 2,4-D as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" in its Group 2B.

    World Health Organization (WHO) has issued its first guidance for the treatment of hepatitis C which affects an estimated 130 million to 150 million people and results in 3,50,000 to 5,00,000 deaths a year.
    The "WHO Guidelines for the screening, care and treatment of persons with Hepatitis C infection" concurs the available effective and safer oral hepatitis medicines, along with the promise of even more new medicines in the next few years.
