WHO is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system. It is responsible for providing leadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends.

Post: Junior Public Health Professional (JPP)

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
The objective of the programme is to:
- Provide an opportunity to young health professionals to strengthen their practical skills and knowledge essential to participate in public health works at the national level;
- Expose them to WHO programmes and thereby contributing to them; and
- To enable the countries to benefit from the knowledge the young professional has acquired, upon completion of the assignment.

Description of duties:
To participate in JPP programme under general supervision of Director, Family Health and Research (FHR) and technical advice of Regioal Adviser-Child and Adolescent Health (RA-CAH), learn and contribute to CAH programme at regional and country levels while getting training to develop his/her own technical capability.
1. To assist in monitoring implementation of strategic frameworks on newborn, child health, adolescent health and prevention of birth defects.
2. To participate in regional and national capacity building meetings/workshops in CAH area of work.
3. To collate and compile data and information on issues related to newborn, child health, adolescent health and prevention of birth defects to strengthen strategic information and evidence base.
4. To collaborate with relevant WHO departments and partners to promote understanding on process and value of collaboration in the CAH area of work.
5. To undertake work-related travel and training as advised by the supervisor, and approved by the Regional Director, such as participation in seminars, workshops, discussions at national and regional level.
6. To participate and contribute to operational research and national surveys related to CAH area of work.
7. Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Essential: Master's degree in health-related sciences in one of the following areas with an emphasis on health-related issues: medicine, pharmacology, pharmacy, public health.

If the Master's degree is in medicine or public health then the basic degree should be related to pharmaceuticals.
WHO only considers higher educational qualifications obtained from an accredited institution. The list can be accessed through this link: http://www.whed.net/

Skills:
Functional Skills and knowledge:
1. Excellent knowledge of MS Office applications and computer skills for making high quality technical presentations including data analysis;
2. Good analytical and writing skills
3. Ability to present/communicate complex issues clearly
4. Demonstrated skills in facilitation of training programmes.

Competencies:
1. Communication

3. Respecting and promoting indiviual and cultural differences
4. Knowing and managing yourself
5. Producing results

Desirable: Knowledge of WHO rules and regulations and good knowledge of working of UN and other international agencies.

IT Skills:
Excellent knowledge of MS Office applications and computer skills for making high quality technical presentations including data analysis.

Experience:
Essential: Two years of relevant professional work experience related to managing medicines.

Desirable: Additional three years experience related to managing medicines. Experience in managing medicines in countries of the South-East Asia Region.
Languages:
Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English. Other regional language(s) would be an asset.
