Periyar College of Pharmaceutical Sciences (PCPS) celebrated the 62nd National Pharmacy Week from 19th to 25th November 2023, with the theme "Join Pharmacists to Ensure Patient Safety." Several activities were executed to educate young aspiring pharmacists on the duties of the Pharmacy Profession. The key objective of the event was to highlight the significant contribution of pharmacists in healthcare sector.The event began with a Pharma Book Fair & Plantation of saplings on 20.11.223; a Community Outreach Programme to create Drug Abuse awareness in and around KK Nagar locality by students on 21.11.2023

As a part of it, an International Symposium on the topic "New Frontiers in Drug Discovery & Development" was held on 22.11.2023 (Tuesday). The resource speaker Dr. Shalini Sivadasan, Professor and Head Department of Pharmacy Practice, KMCH College of Pharmacy, Coimbatore elaborated on the Impact of ‘Clinical Pharmacists in mastering the case and its Clinical Correlates’. In continuation to this, delegates presented their research works as E - Posters and Oral Presentations.Dr. S. Palanisamy, Programme Director, Master of Pharmacy Practice, International Medical University, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, then particularized the emerging role of pharmacists in Geriatric Care. Dr. K. C. Kandasamy, Professor and Head, Department of Pharmacognosy, Karpagam College of Pharmacy, Coimbatore, took over the next session and emphasized on the use of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs) towards industrial and societal demands.
On 23.11.2023 and 24.11.2023 competitions like essay writing, elocution and pharma quiz were conducted to inhouse student participants. On 25.11.2023, Theme lecture entitled “Join Pharmacists to ensure Patients Safety” was delivered by Dr. Guru Prasad Mohanta, Professor and Head, Department of Pharmacy Practice, CL Baid Metha College of Pharmacy, Chennai (Former National Technical Officer, WHO Country Office for India; Former Professor and Head, Annamalai University). He emphasized on the philosophy of "Do No Harm" in healthcare involving safe pharmacotherapy that includes drug safety and medication safety.
Drug safety involves managing errors in the use of medicinal products, while medication safety focuses on preventing and managing these errors. Healthcare institutions must report adverse events to the National Pharmacovigilance Programme, and clinical pharmacists should document and prevent these events. Creating a safety culture in medicine use management is crucial for promoting medication safety.Students and teachers contributed Pharmaceutical, Competitive and General Books worth Rs. 69,054/- (Rupees Sixty Nine Thousand and Fifty Four only)to the college library at this event.
Prizes were presented to the winners of the E-Poster, Oral Presentation, Elocution, Essay Writing, Sports and Cultural competitions. The winners were congratulated by the Chief Guest and the Principal. The National Pharmacy Week of 2023 concluded magnificently and with great success.
