Indian scientists are working day and night to find solutions against the threat of Covid-19. Scientists from Central Salt and Marine Chemical Research Institute (CSMCRI), located in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, have developed a unique face-mask, which can destroy the virus.

Scientists at CSMCRI say that the outer porous membrane of this mask is made of modified polysulfone material, which is 150 micrometers thick. This material can destroy any virus of 60 nanometers or more. The diameter of the corona virus (COVID-19) is between 80-120 nanometers.

If this mask gets medical recognition, it may help to protect the common people struggling with the Covid-19 outbreak, as well as the medical staff and doctors involved in the disease. Another feature of this mask is that it can be washed and reused. It is much cheaper than other expensive masks and it costs less than Rs 50.

Dr. VK Shahi, Head of department of membrane science and separation technology, CSMCRI-CSIR points out that, "the idea of developing such a mask is quite new in itself. Its outer layer is resistant to viruses, fungi and bacteria. This means that any pathogenic microorganism can be destroyed when exposed to its outer layer. Looking at it by this way, it could be proven better than the N-95 mask."

Dr Shahi said that making this mask costs 25 to 45 rupees, which is much lower than other masks. The institute has developed five versions of this mask, using different types of membranes. It has taken about a week to develop this mask and its use may get legal approval in the next few days.
