The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has set price caps for an additional 15 drugs, including those used for the treatment of heart disease, infections, cancer, hypertension and pain relief.
The drug pricing regulator has a mandate to correct / revise the prices of drugs and controlled formulations in bulk and to apply price and availability of medicines in the country under the Drug Orders (price controls).
Some of the medicines include anti-biotic Vancomycin, cancer treatment drug Etoposide, blood pressure medicine Noradrenaline and Digoxin used to treat heart ailments.
The NPPA asked all manufacturers to sell brand name drugs, generic drugs or both versions of these drugs to meet their pricing guidelines. It is entrusted with recovering of amounts overcharged by manufacturers for the controlled drugs from the consumers for the controlled drugs. NPPA also monitors the prices of decontrolled drugs in order to keep them at reasonable levels.
