Retired Armed Forces personnel till 2002 could avail medical facilities only for specific high cost surgery/treatment for a limited number of diseases covered under the Army Group Insurance(Medical Branch Scheme) (AGI(MBS)) and Armed Forces Group Insurance Scheme(Management Information System) (AFGIS (MIS)) schemes. These medicare schemes could provide some relief to the ESM, but it was not a comprehensive scheme as compared to and available for other Central Government Employees. Therefore, the requirement was felt of establishing a medicare system which could provide quality medicare to the retirees of the Armed Forces.

A new study shows the feasibility of using gene therapy to treat the progressive neurodegenerative disorder chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). The study, which demonstrated the effectiveness of direct delivery of gene therapy into the brain of a mouse model of CTE, is published in Human Gene Therapy, a peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers.

Risk of hepatotoxicity

New Zealand. Medsafe has announced that hepatotoxicity is the most significant risk of harm with vildagliptin.

Vildagliptin is a potent and selective dipeptidyl-peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Possible risk of opioid effects in breastfed babies

New Zealand. Medsafe has announced that CARM received a case report where a neonate suffered feeding disorder, somnolence (sleepiness), respiratory disorder and weight decrease while the breastfeeding mother was taking tramadol (Tramal® and Arrow®).

Rare risk of hepatic injury

Ireland. The HPRA has announced that serious cases of drug-induced liver injury, (such as acute liver failure, hepatitis and jaundice and cases requiring liver transplantation) have been observed in patients treated with tocilizumab (RoActemra®).

Dangerous when not used correctly

New Zealand. Medsafe has announced that they have received cases of serious adverse events related to medication errors associated with prescribing, dispensing and communication to caregivers in children.

Risk of inflammation of pancreas

Canada. Health Canada has announced that there is a link between methimazole (Tapazole®) and the risk of acute pancreatitis.

Methimazole, also known as thiamazole, is a prescription drug to treat hyperthyroidism, a condition where too much thyroid hormone is produced.

Risk of haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH)

New Zealand. Medsafe has announced that haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) has been reported internationally in patients taking lamotrigine.
