Kailash Institute of Pharmacy and Management have been established under the aegis of Ashutosh Shiksha Evam Sewa Sansthan in the benevolent guidance and leadership of Mr. R. D. CSIR-Central Institute of Medicinal & Aromatic Plants (CIMAP), Lucknow is a constituent laboratory of Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi. CSIR-CIMAP undertakes basic and applied research in important areas of plant sciences.

CDRI is the seventh among the laboratories established by Government of India as a constituent laboratory of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, New Delhi. The idea for establishment of a laboratory exclusively for drug research was put forward by Dr. B. Mukerji, the then Director, Biochemical Standardization Laboratory, Calcutta in his presidential address to the Physiology session of the Indian Science Congress held at Nagpur in 1945.

On 16th September 2002 an Act was passed by the Government of Uttar Pradesh resulting in a major milestone in change in the history of the institution in converting and upgrading it as Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University. On the demand of the general public and more than 40,000 Georgians the world over, teachers and students of the University, the Government of Uttar Pradesh in the last week of October 2003 decided to revert the name of the medical university from C.S.M. Medical University to K.G. Medical University.
