According to the Confederation of Indian Industries ( CII),  Currently valued at around $ 4.6 billion ( at current forex rate of Rs. 67 per $, 30800 Crore.), the beauty and cosmetic industry is projected to grow between 18-20 per cent per annum in the next couple of years. There are many global giant players like Procter and Gamble, Loreal, Unilever etc. which have strong presence in Indian market. Apart from these MNC companies, many Indian companies like Himalaya , Godrej, ITC,  Emami, Marico, Dabur etc. also have strong presence not only in India but also abroad. Recently, Patanjali Ayurveda has taken the market as very interesting presence within year time, and showed runaway success.

Despite such huge industry and very robust consumption trend across urban and rural areas, there is scarcity of special talent which is required to lead the research and innovation in this industry. There are very few courses being offered which focuses on creating professionals who can help in developing cosmetic industry.

In 2014, Nirma University in Ahmedabad - Gujarat (NAAC as ‘A’ grade in 2015), started a special course in M.Sc Cosmetic Technology for bridging the need of cosmetic industry. This course emphasis on producing professionals who can work in areas of Research , Quality Assurance, Supply chain, Production, Consumer behaviour etc. Of cosmetic and personal care industry.

The course is designed by global and domestic experts from Beirsdorf, Zydus wellness and other Indian companies.

The course has received an overwhelming response from Industry. The students of M.Sc cosmetic technology have got paid internships and placement in various reputed organizations like Nivea Research Center, ITC Research Centre, Marico Research Centre, Brillare Sciences, Ecotrail - IBA cosmetics, Mikasa Cosmetics, etc.  Looking at the need of the industry, the course holds a niche and bright future for the coming years.
