The Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) is a public private partnership that has collaboratively evolved through consultations with multiple constituencies including Indian and international academia, state and central governments, multi & bi-lateral agencies and civil society groups. PHFI is a response to redress the limited institutional capacity in India for strengthening training, research and policy development in the area of Public Health.
Structured as an independent foundation, PHFI adopts a broad, integrative approach to public health, tailoring its endeavours to Indian conditions and bearing relevance to countries facing similar challenges and concerns. The PHFI focuses on broad dimensions of public health that encompass promotive, preventive and therapeutic services, many of which are frequently lost sight of in policy planning as well as in popular understanding.

Project Profile
Welcome Trust (WT) has awarded a £4.5 Million grant to London School of Hygiene and PHFI for setting up a Centre (SANCD) for Chronic Disease Research based in New Delhi over the next five years. The Centre comprises a network of existing research groups led by University of London investigators and Indian partner organizations in Mumbai, Goa, Chennai and Pondicherry. The Network conducts research on the causes, prevention and management of common chronic diseases and currently has 16 staff based in its central office in Green Park, New Delhi.
COPD Genetics Consortium is a multi-centric study funded by Department of Biotechnology (DBT), India, for three years (2011-2014) to SANCD/PHFI, New Delhi, in which we have a post of senior research fellow (SRF) for handling various aspects of the project including lab work.
Job Description/Responsibilities
This DBT-SRF will work under the direction of other senior investigators involved in the project and assist them in handling activities ranging from field-work to wet laboratory work to scanning of literature in line with the laboratory work. Specifically, (s)he will responsible for:
Assisting the laboratory manager in developing processes and protocols for storage, transportation, processing and analyses of blood and other biological specimen samples for epidemiological studies.
Facilitating systematic labeling of biological samples from different projects and their proper storage in different freezers.
Coordinating with other field-workers and investigators in all the sites of the consortium, and wherever necessary helping the other partners in maintaining the speed of the field-work.
Entering the filled questionnaire into the database.
Helping in standardization of laboratory assays of DNA, RNA extraction from various biological samples, quantification and in preparation of SOPs.
Monitoring the quality of data and also help in documenting the use of consumables in the laboratory and reporting to the laboratory manager.
Assist in creation and maintenance of database for storage and tracking of extracted samples that includes tabulation of the field records, data collected and maintenance of databases.
Carrying out basic analyses (i.e. tabulations, charts etc.) of data.
Desired profile of the candidate
M.Sc. in the area of Life Sciences (like Human Genetics, Public Health, Biological Anthropology, Genetics, Zoology, Biochemistry, and Biotechnology) plus NET qualified
OR
M.Sc. in the area of Life Sciences (like Human Genetics, Public Health, Biological Anthropology, Genetics, Zoology, Biochemistry, and Biotechnology) plus minimum two years research experience
Desirable Qualifications:
Ph.D in any area of Life Sciences (like Human Genetics, Public Health, Biological Anthropology, Genetics, Zoology, Biochemistry and Biotechnology).
OR
M.D. with some research experience
Experience and Abilities
Basic Molecular genetics laboratory experience (essential)
Good verbal and written communication skills
Oral presentations to scientific meetings
Writing of scientific papers
Basic statistical analytical skills
Ability to work in a group setting
Some experience of carrying out basic molecular genetics laboratory work is desirable.
Excellent communication and writing skills
Ability to work well as part of a team and independently
Experience of Field-work
Desired work experience (in complete years): Minimum: 2; Maximum: 10
Compensation Offered: Salary will be as per the norms of DBT, India. The contract will be of one year’s duration, and will be subsequently reviewed based on performance.
Other Information: The SRF will be governed by the disciplinary regulations of SANCD/PHFI. SRF have to work from Monday to Saturday, and will only be eligible for casual leaves as per the rules of SANCD/PHFI.
