ICGEB invites applications for the post of Group Leader

The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), established in 1983, is an international, intergovernmental organisation conceived as a Centre of excellence for research, training and technology transfer to industry in the field of biotechnology to promote sustainable global development. The Centre conducts innovative research in life sciences and strengthens the research capability of its over 60 Member States through training, funding programs and advisory services. Located in Trieste (Italy), New Delhi (India) and Cape Town (South Africa), and in collaboration with over 40 Affiliated Centres worldwide, the three ICGEB Components provide a scientific and educational environment of the highest international standards.

Post : Group Leader, Anti-Microbial Resistance

Duty Station : Trieste, Italy
Date Required : 1st September 2025
Type of Contract : Fixed-term appointment
Duration : An initial period of one year with further extensions of four years, subject to satisfactory performance.
Level : P1-P3 (UN Scale) depending upon experience and seniority
Qualifications : PhD in Biology, Chemistry, Biotechnology or related fields. Relevant professional experience at the international level in public health management of antimicrobial resistance or related fields. Previous experience in infectious/communicable diseases or Biological Safety Levels 3 (BSL3) facilities would be advantageous. 
Competencies : The successful candidate will develop a competitive research program on question(s) of molecular biology and/or biotechnology in antimicrobial resistance. The candidate will have a proven ability in working and collaborating at international level and a proven track record in attracting competitive research grant funding. Previous experience in functional mechanistic studies with cell or rodent model strains and use and previous experience of working in a BSL3 facility will be desirable. The candidate will also be expected to be skilled in science communication and technical writing.

Duties
Under the guidance and supervision of the Director-General and the Scientific Coordinator, the Group Leader will provide strategic leadership and funding and coordinate research activities in the Trieste Headquarters and will be responsible for : 
• Initiate and establish in-field collaborations and networks with scientists in the ICGEB Member Countries that work on Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR) or wish to start doing so. 
• Provide strategic leadership in developing and implementing strategies on AMR for the ICGEB Member Countries that may require it, with the objective of achieving results that impact AMR in the region. 
• Develop and secure funding for a vigorous, externally funded research program on AMR through competitive grant applications, resource mobilization from donors, provision of expert technical assistance to the country, policy development, enhancement of research capabilities in Member Countries, etc.
• Support development of regional AMR policies, strategies, programs and activities eventually in collaboration with UN technical clusters ie. WHO, in the context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and European networks. 
• Collaborate with the other ICGEB Group Leaders in the overall scientific organization and in the implementation of the research programs of the ICGEB. 
• Supervise, mentor and manage the research activities of the junior staff, fellows and technicians in the AMR group; 
• Take part in ICGEB’s training and capacity-building activities; 
• Perform other work-related duties, as may be required.
Offer : ICGEB will provide a startup equipped laboratory, a staff research assistant, funds for laboratory consumables, access to ICGEB facilities (including a new BSL3 facility), pre-doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships as well as supporting collaborations with its other research groups and ICGEB global community 
Languages : Fluency in English. Knowledge of Italian and other languages will be an asset
