Job Description
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
The Specific objective of the programme is to support and collaborate with Member States and partners to strengthen capacity of country offices and of national authorities in the development, implementation and evaluation of four technical areas; prevention and management of injuries, violence, disabilities and rehabilitation; including in the countries' effort to achieve SDG and other global targets. The programme focuses on prevention and system management. WHO SEARO emphasizes on road safety and drowning prevention for injury prevention program; and mobility disabilities, assistive technologies, preventable blindness, and prevention of hearing loss for disability and rehabilitation programs. Incumbent is expected to work with Member States and partners, and coordinate across departments and across three levels; in raising attention, strengthening national capacity, promoting implementation of WHO global public health goods, mobilizing collaboration across sectors, and improving information system; for relevant technical areas.
Description of Duties
Under the general guidance of Director, Programme Management, and the direct supervision of Director, Department of Noncommunicable Diseases and Environmental Health (NDE), to:
1. Collaborate and provide technical assistance to the Member States in the technical areas of prevention and management of injuries, violence, disabilities and rehabilitation;
2. Provide technical support to national authorities for planning, implementing, supervising, coordinating and evaluating the programme areas mentioned above. This also includes the establishment of multi-sectoral coordination mechanism for an effective delivery of the programme.
3. Promote and build capacity of Member States in developing surveillance systems for injury, violence and disabilities and provide support in analyzing and using surveillance data for policy and programme development;
4. Promote and technically support the development of research in relevant areas under these programmes and assist in the documentation and dissemination of research results and best practices;
5. Take the lead in the development and management of the inter-country programmes in the above fields in support of the relevant national activities;
6. Be the focal person to plan and organize inter-country workshops and training courses on public health aspects of the programme and provide technical support in designing and developing relevant training programme and material in the countries;
7. Identify and provide assistance in establishing centres of excellence in the countries of the Region and provide technical support in obtaining extra budgetary resources, working closely with all departments in the Regional Office, donor agencies, concerned international organizations and the focal points at WHO/HQ;
8. Prepare technical report and documents on programme activities at the Regional and country level, based on critical review and analysis. Provide advice to the Organization and Member States for prevention of injury, violence, disability and acute trauma care and strengthening of rehabilitation; and
9. Perform other functions as assigned.
Candidate Profile
Education
Essential : An advanced university degree in medicine, public health, management, or health related sciences.
Desirable : Health related PhD.
Experience
Essential : At least ten years of relevant experience, including considerable experience obtained in an international context, in the field of public health.
Desirable : Experience in planning, project management and system administration; public health research-preferably in the areas of prevention and management of injuries, violence, disabilities and rehabilitation; teaching/training of health personnel/providers.
Skills
• Broad knowledge of principles, practices, methods and technologies in public health management, especially in areas of his/her responsibility.

Remuneration : WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 90,664 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 2697 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
