The faculty members of the department of Chemistry are actively engaged in research work in different field of Chemistry.

ABOUT THE SEMINAR
At the time of stoneage man was completely dependent on Nature. Even today nature provides the major contribution to mankind in different aspects of life. Now a day, the enormous growth of molecular biology has created a new awareness on the biochemical potential of natural products. In fact, most of the natural products are the secondary metabolites of versatile chemical structures and are produced by the plants. For this reason, the scientists since ancient time were very interested to isolate the chemical constituents from various medicinal plants and to evaluate their biological activity. At one time several herbal drugs namely quinine, morphine, reserpine, LSD, ephedrine were very much popular drugs in the global market. A recent survey by WHO on the use of drugs reported that more than eighty percent of the world’s populations are using herbal drugs as their medicines. Particularly, in China and Japan, the medical practitioners prescribed mostly herbal drugs for treatment of various diseases. So far less than twenty percent of the recorded flora and fauna has been investigated chemically and biologically. Northeastern region of our country is one of the hot spots of biodiversity. Thus, a vast majority of plants are not yet properly investigated to find out their pharmaceutical and other efficacies.

OBJECTIVES
The main objective of this seminar is to amalgamate the Scientists from different parts of India working in academia and industries with a common goal for discussion on the recent development of natural products and drug discovery in different spheres of life for overall improvement of economy, health and environment. The seminar will be designed to attract the youngsters by disseminating knowledge. The eminent scientists of our country are invited to deliver lecturers on various fields of chemistry / medicinal chemistry/ pharmaceutical chemistry in this seminar.
