Introduction
In pharmaceutical industries, many unprecedented challenges have to be faced regarding cost, time, labour, tough competition by other companies etc. To overcome these problems & curve a significant niche in global market, a new approach has been brought named lean sigma. This concept is used to make work BETTER & FASTER. Many companies have embarked on major improvement programs, including internal re-organization, greater externalization to embrace the biotech culture & capture innovation, & the movement of investments to lower cost countries. The Lean Sigma is a very positive approach in such third-world countries like India. This approach will help to beat the recession after effects very soon with appreciable efficiency.
Basic concept of LEAN SIGMA
Lean Sigma draws on a structural approach to process improvement. It frequently focuses on establishing & optimizing processes for activities that are repititive in nature, as well as driving out wastes from these processes. It relies on involvement of the staff working in the process that is being subjected to an improvement initiative in order to deliver most benefits. Lean Sigma is well suited for its use in highly scientific environment of R&D & usually leads to a high level of engagement of the co-workers.

Advantages & Disadvantages of Lean Sigma
Lean Six Sigma is not different than 'doing' both Lean and Six Sigma.
The advantages are that the two approaches complement each other and enable the best of both to be realized.
One disadvantage is that neither lean or six sigma can or should be blindly applied.
Conclusion
Lean Sigma is a novel approach towards pharmaceutical and technological industry to improve the working quality as well as reducing the time required.
