India says No to Bt brinjal for now

India will not get its first genetically modified (GM) food for at least in 2010. In a major decision, overruling a regulatory approval, Indian government has decided not to permit commercial cultivation of the country’s first GM food product, a Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) brinjal (aubergine) variety, developed by global agri giant Monsanto’s Indian partner, Maharashtra Hybrid Seed Company (Mahyco).

NEWS: Drug Shows Promise Against River Blindness

CHICAGO (Reuters) Feb 09 - Closantel, an older drug used to treat a parasitic liver disease in animals, may prove effective at combating river blindness in humans, a major cause of infection-related blindness, U.S. researchers said on Monday.

Transmitted by blackflies breeding along fast-flowing tropical waterways, river blindness is an eye and skin disease caused by the filaria worm, which infects more than 37 million people in Africa, Central and South America and Yemen.

NEWS: BCG Lab in Chennai will be revived with other two vaccine units: director ,health ministry

By putting at rest all the speculations about the revival of closed vaccine units, especially the BCG Lab in Chennai, the director of Vaccines in the Union Health Ministry, Sanjay Prasad said all the three units will be revived as stated by the Union Health Minster Gulam Nabi Azad in the Parliament.

The director was speaking to Pharmabiz over telephone from New Delhi.

NEWS: Health Ministry begins process for upgradation of Clinical Trial Registry of India

Aiming to incorporate several new features as per the requirements of the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Union Health Ministry will soon upgrade the Clinical Trial Registry of India (CTRI) which was introduced by the government in July 2007 as part of its exercise to regulate the by far unregulated clinical trial industry in the country.
