  • Amgen announced that the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has adopted a positive opinion for an extension to the marketing authorization of a new 420 mg single-dose delivery option for Repatha (evolocumab). The new automated mini doser (AMD) with prefilled cartridge is a hands-free device designed to provide 420 mg of Repatha in a single injection per administration. Repatha is a human monoclonal antibody that blocks a protein called proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9), which inhibits the body's natural system for eliminating "bad" cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol or LDL-C) from the blood.

  • AstraZeneca and Eli Lilly and Company announced a worldwide agreement to co-develop MEDI1814, an antibody selective for amyloid-beta 42 (Aβ42), which is currently in Phase I trials as a potential disease-modifying treatment for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). This agreement builds on the existing collaboration related to AZD3293, a BACE inhibitor in two pivotal Phase III trials.

  • Proteros biostructures GmbH announced that the company has entered into a second research agreement with Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp., Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, USA (known as MSD outside the US and Canada). The new collaboration is aimed at developing small molecule compounds against an additional epigenetic target for the potential treatment of various cancers.

  • Novartis has been awarded the prestigious 2016 Prix Galien USA Award for Best Biotechnology Product for Cosentyx® (secukinumab), as well as the Prix Galien Foundation "Discovery of the Decade" Award for Best Pharmaceutical Product for the drug Gleevec® (imatinib mesylate). The awards were presented at a ceremony in New York City.

  • Medtronic plc announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the IN.PACT(TM) Admiral(TM) drug-coated balloon (DCB) as a treatment for in-stent restenosis (ISR) in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD). This is the first DCB that has gained approval to treat ISR in the U.S. FDA approval was based on ISR data from the IN.PACT Global Study compared to a standard percutaneous balloon angioplasty (PTA) control.

  • Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd has launched Bupropion HCl extended-release tablets, USP (SR) in 100 mg, 150 mg and 200 mg, a therapeutic equivalent generic version of Wellbutrin® SR (bupropion HCl) Sustained-Release Tablets in the United States market approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (USFDA).

  • Biogen announced that aducanumab, its investigational treatment for early Alzheimer’s disease (AD), was granted Fast Track designation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA’s Fast Track program supports the development of new treatments for serious conditions with an unmet medical need such as Alzheimer’s disease.

  • Oragenics announced that it has received feedback from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in response to the Company’s request for a Type C meeting, concerning Phase 2 study protocols for the Company’s OM therapeutic candidate, AG013. As part of the clinical protocol for the study, Oragenics expects to file the Investigational New Drug (IND) update in late 2016 and initiate the study with AG013 in the United States and Europe during early 2017.

  • Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated provided an update on its ongoing Phase 3 development program of its investigational compound VX-661 in combination with ivacaftor, which includes four studies that together are expected to enroll more than 1,000 people with cystic fibrosis (CF). Based on a planned interim futility analysis conducted by the study's independent Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB), Vertex plans to stop the study of VX-661 and ivacaftor in people with one copy of the F508del mutation and one copy of a mutation that results in minimal CFTR protein function (F508del het/min).
