    The history of the IIT system dates back to 1946 when a committee was set up by Hon'ble Sir Jogendra Singh, Member of the Viceroy's Executive Council, Department of Education, Health and Agriculture to consider the setting up of Higher Technical Institutions for post war industrial development in India. The 22 member committee headed by Sri N.R.Sarkar, in its report, recommended the establishment of four Higher Technical Institutions in the Eastern, Western, Northern and Southern regions, possibly on the lines of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, with a number of secondary institutions affiliated to it.

    IIT Roorkee has its roots in the Roorkee College, which was set up in 1847. It was renamed as the Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854. The College laid the foundation of modern engineering education and the use of Civil Engineering practices in the infrastructure development of the country. The irrigation infrastructure in the form of dams and canals, roads and highways, railway, bridges, etc. in the country, all have been the outcome of the engineering education imparted in this, the only engineering institution in the country, at that point of time.   • Career for M.Pharm, M.Sc in Cancer Stem Cells Therapeutics at IIT

    Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide. Apart from the various approaches of treatment, cancer chemotherapy is one of the major therapeutic approaches to combat cancer. However, improvements in the survival rate have been only modest mainly due to presence of Cancer Stem Cells. Today, there is a significant clinical need for novel methods of detection and treatment for cancer stem cells that offers improved sensitivity, specificity and cost-effectiveness.
