DTU Nanotech has a very strong profile in drug delivery and nanomedicine and is part of a range of national and European research programs. The department has unique infrastructure for conducing material research for life science applications and have in recent years build a strong profile within translational research. In the drug delivery area we aim to combine both basic and applied research and have a clear goal of developing new technology that provides solutions to society challenges in treatment of disease.
We seek a new PhD student that will be part of a strategic research program that we have started in collaboration with Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore, ntu.edu.sg. The research focus of the project is to investigate new drug delivery systems for treating cardiovascular diseases with particular focus on disease that is associated with an inflammatory condition and an immunological disorder.
The PhD scholarship will be part of a new research collaboration with NTU and part of the studies (6 months) will be performed at the Nanomedicine Institute at NTU, with Professor Subbu Venkatraman.
Responsibilities and tasks
The PhD scholarship will comprise the following elements:
- Development of new principles for targeting diseased tissue and for obtaining site-specific drug release
- Formulation of drug in nanocarriers
- Characterization of designed nanocarriers
- Characterization of the nanocarrier interactions with biological interfaces
- Biological testing
- Teaching assistance and undergraduate student supervision
- Coursework, corresponding to 30 ECTS points must be included in the PhD scholarship
- Participation and status update presentations at weekly group meetings, supervisor meetings, and general project meetings is anticipated from the student.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree within a relevant chemical or biological area. As immunology is a central part of the scientific challenges the candidate should preferably have conducted their thesis work within this area or have a very good understanding of the area.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.
