The country has witnessed an increase in availability of allopathic doctors with their number standing at 9.38 lakhs, according to National Health Profile-2015, which was released by Union Health Minister J P Nadda. The National Health Profile-2015, published by the Central Bureau of Health Intelligence (CBHI), said that up to 2014, the country has 9,38,861 doctors possessing recognised medical qualifications under the Indian Medical Council Act.
“The total number of allopathic doctors registered (up to 2014) were 9,38,861. There is an increasing trend in the availability of allopathic medical practitioners, dental surgeons and nurses per lakh population over the years. “Number of dental surgeons registered with central and state dental councils of India up to December 31, 2014 was 1,54,436. There is an increasing trend in number of dental surgeons registered with central and state dental council of India from 2007 to 2014,” the report said.
It also said that the number of registered AYUSH doctors in India as on January 1, 2014 was 7,36,538. The report said health infrastructure is an important indicator for understanding the health care policy and welfare mechanism of the country and it signifies investment priority with regards to the creation of health care facilities. “Medical education infrastructure in the country has shown rapid growth during the last 20 years. The country has 398 medical colleges, 305 colleges for BDS courses and 224 colleges which conduct MDS courses. There has been a total admission of 46,456 in 398 medical colleges and 26,240 in BDS and 5,505 in MDS during 2014-15,” the report said.
It further stated that there are 2,865 institutions for general nursing and midwifery with admission capacity of 1,15,844 and 723 colleges for pharmacy (diploma) with an intake capacity of 43,300 as on December 31, 2014. “There are 20,306 hospitals having 6,75,779 beds in the country. 16,816 hospitals are in rural area with 1,83,602 beds and 3,490 hospitals in urban area with 4,92,177 beds,” the report said.
