Clinical research courses

One PhD stipend is available in the Proteomics Technology Development & Application group at The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research (CPR – cpr.ku.dk). The Center has been established at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, to promote basic and applied discovery research on human proteins of medical relevance. The Center comprises a wide range of expertise and resources including proteomics, protein production and characterization to disease mechanisms. The research at the Department of Proteomics is headed by Prof. Dr. Matthias Mann and consists of three independent groups (group leaders: Dr. Michael L. Nielsen, Dr. Chunaram Choudhary and Prof. Jesper V. Olsen). The Nielsen's group focuses on developing novel proteomics methods & technologies for studying the cellular outcomes at a ‘systems-level’, with the aim to understand cellular phenotypes and diseases.

Focus of the Project

  • The PhD student will primarily focus on
  • Develop proteomics technologies for studying poly-ADP-ribosylation (PARylation) on a global scale
  • Investigate the cellular roles of the PARylation in DNA & RNA metabolism
  • Investigate the cellular cross-talk between PARylation and other post-translational modifications (PTMs)

Qualifications

  • Candidates are required to have a Master degree in analytical chemistry or molecular biology prior to starting
  • An analytical aptitude of devising innovative scientific or technical solutions
  • Prior experience in research fields related to “not-so-well-characterized” PTMs such as PARylation, and/or DNA/RNA-protein interactions would be a distinct advantage
  • Knowledge in one or more of the following area(s) would be considered an advantage: genetics and cell biology, cell signaling, or chromatin biology
  • Prior experience in high resolution mass spectrometry is not essential, but would be considered an advantage
  • Knowledge in bioinformatics and large-scale data analysis, or skills in statistical computational environment such as “R” will be considered a distinct advantage, but is not a requirement
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written
  • Strong motivation and excellent scientific skills are essential

Start date: Autumn 2013.

Place of employment and work
The employment is at CPR (cpr.ku.dk), University of Copenhagen, located in central Copenhagen. The research environment at CPR is vibrant, ambitious, and international, with approx. 30 different nationalities currently represented. The Center comprises modern laboratories and state-of-the-art facilities within protein science. Seminars with high-profile international speakers and regular internal research seminars are organized at the Center.

Terms of salary and employment
The PhD fellowship is financially supported by the CPR and the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences.

The research project will be carried out in collaboration with other groups at the center. The candidate must have equivalent to a Danish Master degree. It is a prerequisite that the PhD candidate is enrolled as a PhD student at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences healthsciences.ku.dk/phd/apply/, University of Copenhagen, in accordance to the provision of the Executive Order no. 18 of 14 January 2008 regarding the PhD degree.

Terms of appointment and payment are in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Federation of Professional Associations (AC). The starting salary for candidates with an MSc degree will be a minimum of DKK 309.179 per year (April 2012 level) plus pension contribution (17,1 % in total salary) ism.ku.dk/pension/  and the possibility to negotiate wage.
