ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Mental illness in India is a serious problem, more than 20 million Indians suffering from psychiatric disorders. As per the report of Department of Psychiatry, G.P. Pant Hospital at New Delhi, 1-2% of Indian population suffers from major mental disorders and 5% population from minor depressive disorders.
Unfortunately, the India devotes less than 1% of the health budget in the management of psychiatric disorders. The problem is further compounded by a very small number of psychiatrists and psychiatric nurses the country has. As per the World Health Report 2011, Neuropsychiatry disorders accounts for 12% of the global disease burden and it is likely to increase to 15% by 2020.

In India, more than 70% population live in rural areas with limited access to health care. The most of the psychiatric disorders are attributed as acts of God or to witch craft. Different treatment practices are still adopted in villages ranging from social boycott, to physical confinement to use of concoctions prepared from herbs. While most of these practices are of dubious nature, the use of herbal remedies has got some scientific evidence for their effectiveness. Use of Rawolfia serpentina for psychosis is one such example.

A systematic study of the flora for their psychogenic or antipsychotic activity might lead the discovery of new chemical moieties or treatment approach. The objective of the workshop is to provide a common platform for the Psychiatrists, Psychiatric nurses, Pharmacologists and Pharmacognosists to deliberate on the new approach in the treatment of mental disorders. If the efficacy of traditional treatment based on botanicals could be validated, it might reduce the cost of treatment, adverse drug action etc

The experts from different area such as medicine, psychiatric nursing, pharmacy and botanists will be participating in the one-day seminar.
The envisaged outcome from the workshop is
* Providing a platform for the Psychiatrists, Psychiatric nurses, Pharmacologists and Pharmacognosists to share their experiences and findings and to discuss the future prospects in the management of mental illness.
