National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI) is an autonomous Institute under Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. NABI aims at catalysing the transformation of Agri-food sector in India by being a nodal organization for knowledge generation and translational science leading to value-added products based on Agri-Food biotech innovations for improved household nutritional security. Since its inception in 2010, NABI is involved in research activities for the Bio fortification, development of designer crops for improved nutrition, providing sustainable and novel solutions towards quality food and nutrition, and development of evidence based functional foods to counter malnutrition. Food and nutritional Biotechnology division at NABI requires following research personnel purely on temporary basis.

Research Associate

Name of project:
"Beneficial Modulation of Gut Bacteria as a Strategy for the prevention of Life Style Associated Disorders” (Core Grant)

Summary:
There is a surge in the research on understanding the involvement of gut microbiota in causing chronic diseases. Accordingly, perturbations in the gut microbial communities is observed in many diseases like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), obesity and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This hints that healthy diet modifications could beneficially modulate the microbiota and can reduce the disease risk. Our research group aims to evaluate various dietary ingredients and functional foods for their role in modification of the gut microbiota and in alleviating diseases using rodent models and high through-put “omics” platforms.

Principle Investigator:- Dr. Kanthi Kiran Kondepudi, Scientist E.

Senior Research Fellow

Name of project:
“Metagenomic and Functional Characterization of Soy-based Fermented Food Products from North- East Region” (Project GAP-16)

Duration of the Project: Till 11th January 2020 and the SRF position is co-terminus with the project.

Summary:
Fermented foods and beverages have long been consumed and are the integral part of diets of every community in the world. In India, especially in the Northeast region, fermented foods using local crops and other biological resources are very common and an age old practice. Fermentation processes (and products) are a part of socio-ecological system made of interactions between living and non-living components. Different fermented and non-fermented foods are used in various combinations with traditional vegetables and other products to meet the food and nutritional security. Functional study of the fermented foods from India are lacking.

Principle Investigator:- Dr. Kanthi Kiran Kondepudi, Scientist E.

Responsibilities: -
(a) Metabolite profiling of popular soy based fermented foods from NER;
(b) Animal interventions to understand molecular nutritional/nutrigenomic effects of fermented foods and
(c) develop a process to take fermented food production from house-hold level to commercial level.

Essential qualifications:-
Post graduate degree in Basic Science or Graduate/Post Graduate in professional course selected through a process described through any one of the following
a) Scholars are selected through National Eligibility Tests-CSIR UGC NET including Lectureship (Assistant Professorship) and GATE.
