The National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) was established on July 2, 1999 by merging the Central JALMA Institute for Leprosy (CJIL Field Unit), Avadi with the Institute for Research in Medical Statistics (IRMS), Chennai. The broad objectives of the Institute cover Development of human resources in epidemiology and bio-statistics, Networking of the various ICMR and non-ICMR Institutes at the national level for epidemiological purposes, and Consultancy.

Project Scientist – C (Medical)

Name of the Project : Model Rural Health Research Unit, Tirunelveli

Essential Qualification
MEDICAL Post Graduate degree (MD / DNB) in Community Medicine / PSM / Pharmacy / Pharmacology after MBBS with one year experience (OR) Post Graduate Diploma in above subjects after MBBS with two years’ experience (OR) MBBS degree recognized by MCI with four years’ experience in medical subjects after MBBS degree

Desirable Qualification and Experience :
a) All other things equal, candidates with proven scientific writing skills & good communication skills in English as evidenced by publications either as Primary or Corresponding Author in peer reviewed international journals will be preferred
b) Educational Qualification and duration of experience will be relaxed in case of the deserving candidates
c) Age relaxation is allowable to corresponding years of work experience in the Research Experience in ICMR

Emoluments : Rs.75,000/- per month

Age Limit : 40 years

Nature of Duties :
• Organize and conduct field and lab research activities
• Experience in scientific writing communication (English) in peer reviewed international journals and preparation of reports
• Familiarity with good data management practices
• Analyze data using statistical software like SPSS and Epi Info
• Conduct meetings / workshops / training programs
• Willingness to travel anywhere in India
• Any other work assigned by the PI / Co-PI / Superior Officer / Director

Duration : One year (renewable for the project duration subject to performance and project requirement)

Project Scientist – B (Medical/Non-Medical)

Name of the Project : Establishing a network of population based influenza surveillance platforms for elderly persons in India

Place of posting : ICMR - NIE, Chennai

Essential Qualification
MEDICAL
MBBS Degree with one year Research / Teaching experience (OR) MD in PSM from a recognized University
NON-MEDICAL
BDS degree with one year experience

Desirable Qualification and Experience :
MEDICAL/NON-MEDICAL
i) MD / MDS / MPH / MAE / DPH / PhD in Public Health / Community Medicine / Preventive and Social Medicine / Epidemiology from a recognized University
ii) Knowledge of Computer Applications / Data Management / Data Analysis / Manuscript writing
iii) Experience in field – based health – related research, including field supervision and data collection
iv) Proficient to speak and read in Tamil

Emoluments :
MEDICAL Rs.61,000/- per month (plus HRA)
NON-MEDICAL Rs.48,000/- per month (plus HRA)

Age Limit : OBC – 38 years (including 3 years age relaxation)

Nature of Duties :
a) In charge of planning and implementation of the project
b) Plan the field work, supervise the field activities
c) Conduct data analysis and prepare the weekly / monthly / quarterly reports / manuscript writing
d) Ensure timely data management and reporting
e) Visit and examine hospitalized participants f) Any other work assigned by the PI / Co-PI / Superior Officer / Director

Duration : 9 months
