The history of the IIT system dates back to 1946 when a committee was set up by Hon'ble Sir Jogendra Singh, Member of the Viceroy's Executive Council, Department of Education, Health and Agriculture to consider the setting up of Higher Technical Institutions for post war industrial development in India. The 22 member committee headed by Sri N.R.Sarkar, in its report, recommended the establishment of four Higher Technical Institutions in the Eastern, Western, Northern and Southern regions, possibly on the lines of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, with a number of secondary institutions affiliated to it.

Qualification:
JRF : First class M.Sc./B.Tech in Agriculture /Biochemistry / Botany / Biotechnology /Genetics /Microbiology /Molecular Biology from reputed Institutes or University with GATE/NET qualified.
SRF: either (i) M.Sc./B.Tech, in Agriculture/ Biochemistry/ Botany/ /Biotechnology/Genetics/Microbiology/Molecular Biology, and NET/GATE qualified; and at least two years of post-M.Sc./ B.Tech research experience preferably in plant science/biochemistry/molecular biology, or as evidenced from published papers in standard refereed journals;
or (ii) M.Tech in Agricultural Biotechnology/Agricultural Systems and Management/ Applied Botany/ Biotechnology.

JRF: Rs. 12,000/- p.m
SRF : Rs.14,000/- p.m.
Upper age limit for
JRF : 28 years
SRF : 32 years
Upper age limit is relaxable upto 5 years in the case of candidates belonging to SC / ST / OBC, women and physically handicapped candidates as per CSIR rule.
