The Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) is a not-for-profit public private initiative that has collaboratively evolved through consultations with multiple constituencies including Indian and international academia, state and central governments, multi & bi-lateral agencies and civil society groups. PHFI is a response to redress the limited institutional capacity in India for strengthening training, research and policy development in the area of Public Health.
The PHFI focuses on broad dimensions of public health that encompass promotive, preventive and therapeutic services, many of which are frequently lost sight of in policy planning as well as in popular understanding.

Project Brief:
This is a multi-center case-control study on occupational exposure to pesticides and breast cancer, with data collection in three locations, Chandigarh, Bikaner, Rajasthan and Bathinda, Punjab. Data will be collected through interviewer-administered questionnaires with anthropometric measurements and blood sample collection on a sub-set of participants. The pesticide residue analysis will be conducted on blood samples at Dr. J.P.S. Gill’s laboratory based at the School of Public Health and Zoonoses, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, Punjab.

Job Description/ Responsibilities:
The lab-based Research Assistant will analyse samples at Dr. J.P.S. Gill’s laboratory (GADVASU) for the presence of pesticide residues using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), for organo-chlorines and organophosphates, according to what is relevant as obtained from the pilot input/output survey tool of agricultural workers in our study. Procedural blank, spiked matrix and samples and those with known amounts of standards will also be run to check for contamination, peak identification and quantification. The research fellow will be responsible for ordering reagents and consumables, communication with field investigators for shipment and transfer of samples, analyses, invoice submission, troubleshooting, and organization of samples during storage and transferring data from pesticide residue analysis to Dr. J.P.S. Gill, the PI and project manager.


Qualifications/ Experience required

  • A postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline e.g. Veterinary sciences, (Veterinary Public Health will be preferred), Life Sciences, Agriculture, Pharmacology and toxicology, Chemistry/ Biochemistry and Medical Laboratory Technology
     
  • Experience of working on HPLC, GC, GC-MS and other chromatographic techniques will be preferred
     
  • Good written and communication skills, in English, Hindi and and Punjabi
     
  • Experienced and efficient in taking blood samples
     
  • Field public health research skills (including data collection & biological sample collection preferred)
     
  • Proficiency with computers, data entry software.
     
  • Organizational and management skills
     
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
     
  • Willingness to travel
     

Compensation: Ranges between Rs. 15,000-22,000/-, based on qualification and experience.
